For some people, taking medication prescriptions are not the way for them. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Recently I have actually stopped all of my meds, I felt that I was not having the desired results. It seemed to help for a bit, but it wasn’t helping with my anxiety or my depression.
In fact, I had even ended up having some undesirable side effects and acting strange.
So, I figured I would put this out there for anyone else who does not want to take medication for mood improvement.
How to Naturally Boost Your Mood
Mental illnesses are a hard thing to live with, but accepting your disorder does not mean you have to let it control you. Some ways that can naturally improve your overall mood are;
Ø Going for a walk
o This can energize you as it gets your blood flowing, and the vitamin D from the sun is also naturally beneficial for moods.
Ø Laughing
o Laughter is one the best medicines, perhaps watch a comedian, learn some new jokes, etc.
Ø Aromatherapy
o According to research, your sense of smell communicates with the amygdala. This is a section of the brain that regulates emotions. Some scents trigger a positive reaction and helps reduce anxiety and depression.
Ø Listening to music
o I feel like music is one of the most incredible things. According to this Healthline link it has plenty of benefits including;
§ Improving your emotion regulation abilities
§ Easing stress, tension, and anxiety
§ And promoting healthy brain function.
Ø Increase serotonin levels
o This does not have to be medication! Some things that can naturally improve your serotonin levels are;
§ Working out.
§ Sun, or a light meant to replicate it, exposure.
Ø Positive self-talk
o The more you tell yourself something, the more you start to believe it. As it happens, many of us use a lot of negative self- talk and can have an altogether negative view of ourselves. As such it decreases your mood that much further. Changing your mindset is truly one of the most helpful things.
Ø Make a new friend or hang out with an old one
o Being with people you like can help you not feel so isolated. Too much isolation contributes to an overall depressed mood. Even if you don’t like people very much.
Ø Stop what if and if only thoughts
o You cannot change the past, and there are a handful of things in our control. Control what you can, do not try to control what you can’t, because you will be miserable.
Ø Disconnecting
o Yep, disconnect to screens or electronics of any kind. Take a breather and enjoy something natural.
Practicing Mindfulness
Another way for improvement in your mood is to be mindful. Make yourself fully aware and in the moment. If meditation is not your thing, that is fine, it was never my cup of tea either. However, yoga has shown increased well-being.
It brings you to the present moment and helps you relax. Research is showing many positive attributes related to practicing yoga.
Final Thoughts
Improving your mood does not have to be done with complicated medications and schedules. You truly have the power here to make it or break it. You can only go so long with the same routine that fuels your misery, at some point you need to look at yourself and decide that you deserve to feel better.
That although the pain you are in is not your fault, it is your responsibility to deal with it. And if you choose to not try and feel better, then it really does become your fault.
